Breathe Better, Think Better
The other day as I slugged my way through another project, it occurred to me that I was working inefficiently and ineffectively. This is not a good combination for my best creative work. Wanting to turn that ship around, I asked myself what I was missing. It turns out, it was my breath.
I was holding my breath as I wrestled with my project. Pausing my work, I started a simple conscious breathing exercise. Did I want to stop my work to breathe? Not really. I felt like pausing would interrupt my flow, but the truth was, I was not making good progress anyway.
I gave myself some space and grace. After a few rounds of conscious breathing, I felt both my body and mind relax. This 90-second practice helped me refocus on my work. Random ideas also popped into my mind, helping me renew my creativity about my project. It is crazy how that happens.
